A New Look at
an Old Myth

Wednesday, October 11, 6:30pm
in the Reference Room

An informal talk and discussion about the ancient Irish Celtic myth of Deirdre. Originally an oral tale about people thought to have lived in the first century B.C., Deirdre was first written down by Irish monks in the 7th or 8th centuries and continued to fascinate writers and poets into modern times. Through the centuries, Deirdre, the woman, has been lost. The early Christian monks saw her as a destructive femme fatale and later versions portrayed her as a disempowered quasi Victorian victim. Looking to other ancient Irish tales and historical records, this talk will reexamine the myth to find the real Deirdre. There is no need to be familiar with the myth. All ages welcome.

Coming up in November

Fall Fundraiser
with Jon Bowermaster

Friday, November 10, 7 pm
Marbletown Community Center

Join us for an evening with National Geographic writer and world adventurer Jon Bowermaster for two brand new documentary films drawn from his ongoing OCEANS 8 project—sea kayaking around the world, one continent at a time, studying the health of the world’s seas and the lives of people who depend on them.

The evening’s program will feature BORDER LAND, from his 2005 expedition kayaking the coast of Croatia and its 1,200 islands, dealing in large part with over fishing in the Adriatic…plus, swimming with 600-pound tuna. Jon has also just finished a documentary from his 1999 expedition to the Aleutian Island. The film, BIRTHPLACE OF THE WINDS, could be his favorite to-date. Jon will be available to chat about his experiences, so we encourage you to join us for this interesting event. Meanwhile, check out Jons website.

Tickets are $10.00 at the door, children are free. Refreshments will be served. Special prizes will be featured.

ON THE SHELVES

Poughkeepsie Journal 9.3.06
On the Shelves with Ellen Tannenbaum

Read up on romances before school year starts

On the Shelves is a monthly column by a rotating list of mid-Hudson Valley library directors who comment on notable books coming to your local public library.

As each of us looks forward to the new fall season, the start of the schoolyear and the change in weather, we see our time for great summer readingcoming to an end. Before the leaves fall, why not check out some of the new, terrific and diverse young adult titles available at your local library?

In Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, Nick and Norah meet at a punk Manhattan night club and they begin to fall in love. That's not what makes this novel special. Their story is told in alternating chapters and takes place all in one night. It brings its reader face to face with the hurt, confusion and excitement these teens feel as they get to know one another. Both have come from hurtful relationships and have shared fears that similar results will occur if they follow their hearts into this new relationship. Told from the teen's perspective with realistic situations, graphic language and truthful emotions, this is a love story for mature readers.

Bare your fangs

In a different kind of love story, we meet up again with Raven, a vampire enthusiast, and Alexander, her vampire boyfriend, in Vampire Kisses 3: Vampireville, the third book in the series by Ellen Schreiber. Raven is ready to become Alexander's companion for eternity, but first they must work together to save the Dullsville local soccer star, Trevor. He has been selected to be the companion of the vampire Luna and she and her twin, Jagger, have moved into Dullsville to change him. Filled with spooky yet romantic moments, this light fare will leave most young vampire fans thirsting for book four.

Difficult decisions

In Between Mom and Jo, by Julie Anne Peters, 14-year-old Nick faces different issues. He has two moms, Erin, his birth mother, and Jo, her partner. The three have lived a happy life together even though they have faced prejudice and taunting. Whatever the issue, they have faced it together, seeking justice. When Erin and Jo split up, everything changes. Erin is the birth mother and has legal rights over Nick, Jo has nothing. Erin forbids any relationship between Jo and Nick. Both are devastated. "Between Mom and Jo" shows the effects that divorce leaves on families, especially children. As a minor, Nick has no say in his custody or the home he lives in. Jo has no legal recourse, but must wait for Erin to understand the pain she is putting her son through.

Ellen Tannenbaum is the Director of the Dover Plains Library. She is also a member of the Anne Izard Storyteller's Choice Awards Committee.
