BOOKLISTS

Every month in this spot we feature reading suggestions. Visit the Library to pick up a copy of the booklist-of-the-month brochure and check out a book from our current display.

The Greatest Books Since 2000

"This list is generated from 107 "best of" book lists from a variety of great sources. An algorithm is used to create a master list based on how many lists a particular book appears on. Some lists count more than others. I generally trust "best of all time" lists voted by authors and experts over user-generated lists. On the lists that are actually ranked, the book that is 1st counts a lot more than the book that's 100th." From The Greatest Books website. more

SEAN NOS Irish Dance Class with Siobhan Butler

Tuesdays 3/22, 3/29, 4/5 - 6pm
Marbletown Community Center - $5
Please register

Sean-nós dance is considered by many to be the original form of solo Irish dance. Literally translating to "old style," sean-nós is an improvised dance style that is unique to each dancer. Dancers interpet the music through close-to-floor percussive movements, adding their own stylized flourishes.

This three week series is a wonderful opportunity for those interested in starting, or returning to, the basics of sean-nós dance. This class will give students the tools to begin building their repertoire and developing their sense of musicality as dancers. Open to dancers aged 13 and older. Please register for these lessons on our website.

Siobhan Butler is an acclaimed performer and teacher of Irish dance. Specializing in traditional Irish step and sean-nós dance, Siobhan's expertise in Irish dance has led her to teach at prestigious venues such as the Milwaukee Irish Fest, Villanova University, Boston College, The O'Flaherty Retreat, and Sean-Nós NorthWest to name only a few. She has been a featured dancer on the Nationally televised stations TG4 and RTE in Ireland and was the first sean-nós dancer to perform at the world famous Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. More about Siobhan can be found at her website.

Iranian Women Beyond the Chador; A talk in two parts

An illustrated lecture by Susan and Paul Sprachman

Wednesday, March 16, 7 pm
Marbletown Community Center

In the first part of their talk, Susan's introduces through her photographs the topography, villages, and cities of Iran. The focus later shifts to images of Iranian women and the ways in which they use style and flair to bend legal restrictions on showing their hair and bodies.

In the second part of the talk, Paul will discuss how some Iranian women appear in current Persian writing. It focuses on two books Paul has recently translated: One Woman's War, a memoir by Zahra Hosseini, a devout Shia and refugee from Iraq who came of age during the early days of the Iran-Iraq war; and Tehran: Revolution Street that tells the story of Shahrzad, a high school student who finds herself the object of affection of two men—one, rich and powerful and the other poor and powerless.

A separate exhibit, Looking Beyond, is on view at the Library through the end of March featuring Susan's travel photographs.

The Sprachmans became full-time residents of Kripplebush after retiring in 2014. They have lived in New Jersey, Chicago, Iran, and Afghanistan.

Susan directed research projects on early childhood for Mathematica Policy Research in Princeton and is now focusing on her photography and volunteer activities. She has shown her work in juried shows at the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum and the Art Society of Kingston, and gave an earlier version of this presentation for Arts Mid-Hudson. She is a trustee of the Ulster County Historical Society, a member of the Marbletown Historic Preservation Commission, and a volunteer with the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Ulster County (CASA).

Paul is Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University. He has a Masters Degree in Persian Literature from Tehran University and a PhD in Persian and Arabic from the University of Chicago. He is the author of studies of classical and modern Persian writing, some of which has been censored. His recent translations from Persian to English include the books discussed in the talk as well as others by writers who were teenage combatants in the Iran-Iraq War (1980-89). The books are available at the Stone Ridge Library.

KNITTING GROUP

Every Saturday
10am-noon

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.
