Listening to Silence,
David Levy

October 28, 6 pm, Reference Room

Library patron David Levy kindly offered to perform for the Library community a program titled "Listening to Silence," where he will play Native American style flutes in a meditative setting. After the passing of his wife, David began playing his music in nursing homes and hospice, bringing joy and peace to his listeners. When he offered to bring his program to the Library community, we decided to hold it in the season of All Saints and All Souls, and Halloween, as it seems to fit with the theme of death and rebirth. David will also play some lively pennywhist le tunes that he learned during time spent in Ireland!

LIBRARY AWARDED NYS GRANT FOR PUBLIC COMPUTERS

The Stone Ridge Library has received an $8,000 grant from the New York State Senate through the efforts of State Senator George A. Amedore, Jr., a Republican representing the 46th Senatorial District. The funds will be used to purchase six new PC workstation computers for public access and two PCs and barcode scanners for use at the Circulation Desk. The workstations will replace the existing public computers that were last upgraded in 2009.

"Current technology needs address two sides of the spectrum for service to our patrons," said Library Director Jody Ford. "On the one hand, a significant portion of our population still relies on standard PCs for research, job applications, and personal email communication. On the other side of the technology spectrum are tech-savvy patrons for whom the 2D scanners will serve to accommodate their library cards held on mobile devices—a trend that we expect to continue."

"We are grateful to Sen. Amedore," commented Robert Miraldi, President of the Library's Board of Trustees. "This funding helps us serve our patrons. We are a small but very busy library, and offering computer services is vital to our mission." "And, with so much money going towards the Library's building restoration and renovation," Miraldi said, "finding money for computers has been difficult. This helps us and our patrons tremendously."

"Libraries are an integral part of our communities, and it's important to make sure they have the resources necessary to continue to provide crucial services to our residents," said Senator George Amedore. "I'm glad I was able to secure this funding for the Stone Ridge Library to replace their aging PCs and purchase new scanners that will be compatible with today's technology. The library already does an incredible job serving the community, and these improvements will create an even better experience for those who visit."

KNITTING GROUP

Every Saturday
10am-noon

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.
