BAG SALE

Sunday, Oct. 11
10am - 2pm, on the Library Lawn

The annual Fall Book Sale, takes place on Columbus Day weekend, rain or shine, on the Library grounds. The Book Sale, boasting many new selections since the June Library Fair, is scheduled from 10am to 2pm on both days.

Saturday's event will also feature soups donated from local restaurants. This year's offerings include samplings from Davenport Farms, The Roost, Lekker, Lydia's Café, Hillside Friends & Family, Saunderskill Farms, Depuy Canal House, The Eggs Nest, High Falls Kitchenette and The High Falls Café. Coffee and tea, artisanal bread, cookies, bars and other sweet treats will also be served. On Sunday grab a bag or two of books for $8 a bag.

New this year is the addition of Spring Flower Bulbs! Allium, Tulips, Hyacinth and Daffodils will all be available to bring home to plant or spring blooming, or to give as gifts to gardener friends. Seasoned gardeners will love the varieties; newcomers will find the instructions useful.

The Saturday knitters will be on hand to demonstrate their craft and sell their handmade gift items. Hand-woven tea towels, jewelry and books will also be available. Our Fall Artist, Mira Fink's watercolors, paintings and greeting cards will be on display throughout the Library and available for purchase.

The Fall Book Sale has become a welcome addition to the myriad events and happenings that are part of life in the Hudson Valley. It is also one of the Library's most important fundraising events, rivaling the June Library Fair. The proceeds, once expenses for tents and tables have been met, go directly to the Library's operating budget, helping buy books and supplies, and keeping the heat on in the upcoming winter days. Fundraising for the building restoration and capital campaign is conducted ongoing by the Stone Ridge Library Foundation.

Free Concert with Irish Gaelic Singer
Claire Nic Ruairi and
Scottish Gaelic singer and harpist James Ruff

Monday, October 19 at 7pm
Marbletown Community Center

Claire Nic Ruairi is an Irish traditional singer from Derry, Ireland. She is the singer in residence at 'an tSeanbheairic', Falcarragh, Donegal, having been awarded the prestigious Eamonn Ghrainne Scholarship. In 2013 Claire won First Prize in Irish language traditional singing at Fleadh Choeoil na hEireann, the largest traditional Irish music festival in existence which is held annually in various locations throughout Ireland.

In addition to performing in and organizing traditional music events, Claire is a member of several traditional Irish language choirs. An Irish and French teacher, she is currently on a career break from a full-time post to concentrate on her singing. She is currently touring the area and performing at a number of local venues.

Experienced in early music, concert and opera, tenor James Ruff has, since 2005 worked to master Scottish Gaelic language, traditional Gaelic Song, and the early Gaelic wire harp. He presents concerts highlighting the haunting beauty of the historic Gaelic music and poetry of Scotland and Ireland, playing the historic music of the harper bards. Music Director of Christ the King Episcopal Church in Stone Ridge, Mr. Ruff will perform with Claire Nic Ruairi for this special occasion.

Bob McDonald, Gaelic Irish language teacher and event promoter, thanked everyone for making the event a reality. "It will be a wonderful opportunity for us to provide a window for the audience through which they can experience a rarely presented cultural jewel of Gaeldom, songs and melodies of great antiquity and beauty. It will be readily apparent that one does not have to speak Gaelic to appreciate the breadth and depth of human emotion and spirit contained within the songs and music."

The concert is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served. For information, please contact Diane DeChillo, Library Program Manager, at 845 687-7023, Ext. 108.

TEA TIME BOOK GROUP

Wednesday, October 14
4pm in the Biography Room

The selection this month is The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim. A discrete advertisement in The Times, addressed to "those who appreciate wisteria and sunshine," is the prelude to a revelatory month for four very different women. High above a bay on the Italian Riviera stands the medieval castle San Salvatore. Beckoned to this haven are Mrs. Wilkins, Mrs. Arbuthnot, Mrs. Fisher, and Lady Caroline Dester, each quietly craving a respite. Lulled by the gentle spirit of the Mediterranean, they gradually shed their public skins, discovering a harmony each of them has longed for but none has ever known. This book is in the "always available" public domain eBooks on the Overdrive website.

CLIO'S MUSE
A History Reading Club

Wednesday, October 7
7pm in the Biography Room

The reading selection for October is Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship by Jon Meachum. The fullest portrait to date of the complex emotional connection between Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, the two men who led the Free World to victory in World War II. At the time, there had never been anything like the friendship between the two men, and there has not been anything really like it since: a President and Prime Minister spending enormous amounts of time together (120 days during the war), fishing, smoking, and drinking late into the night in places as far-flung as the White House, Casablanca, and Tehran, talking to one another of politics, war, family, and illness.

KNITTING GROUP

Every Saturday
10am-noon

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.
