LIBRARY FAIR

Saturday, June 11
10am to 3pm on the Library Lawn

BAG SALE

Sunday, June 12
10am to 2pm on the Library Lawn

The Stone Ridge Library will host the 70th Annual Library Fair on Saturday, June 11 from 10 am to 3 pm, rain or shine, on the Library grounds. The festivities will include a huge book sale, plant sale, children's activities, craft and gift booths, food and drink, and entertainment all day.

The main event of the Fair is Books! Displayed under the large striped tent, the selection will include everything from novels to history, cooking to mystery, biographies, poetry, and a collection of art and specialty "coffee table" books.

The Plant Tent will be laden with flowering annuals and perennials, herbs and heirlooms plus plants donated from botanically gifted patrons. An interesting assortment of daylilies, labeled by variety, height, color and growing instructions will also be available.

Shoppers will find gifts and tableware, art, and jewelry at Eleanor's Emporium, and the Saturday Knitters will be on hand to demonstrate their craft and sell their wares.

Traditional picnic fare will be served, with Cherries of Stone Ridge joining the Library team this year. Hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and peppers plus vegetarian dishes will be available. Fair favorites--home made strawberry shortcake and root beer floats will also be on the menu, along with coffee and tea, artisan bread, and home-baked desserts.

For children, lots of games, face painting, and children's activities will be provided. There will also be a large selection of children's books for sale.

Entertainment will be provided all day, beginning with a debut of selections from local playwright Edward Schoelwer's March in the Parade: A Play with Music for Young Audiences under the musical direction of Andrea Shaut.

Cheryl and Kurt of the Kurt Henry Band will play at 11. Henry's lyrics have been likened to fine poetry (Music Machine).

Bloom Women's Voice Ensemble under the direction of Debbie Lan will perform at Noon, with original arrangements of songs by Peter Gabriel, James Taylor, Sweet Honey in the Rock and more, as well as some original compositions.

Then, at 1pm Breakaway with Robin Baker at will take the stage, bringing in their great mix of rock, funk, pop and ballads. The Rondout Valley High School Jazz Band with Randolph Loder directing will take the stage at 2 pm, wrapping up the day's entertainment with a high-energy, creative performance.

Profits from the day's events go to the Stone Ridge Library operating budget to pay for books, supplies, salaries, utilities, etc. Funds for the capital campaign and building restoration are raised separately by the Stone Ridge Library Foundation.

On Sunday, the popular Bag Sale will be open from 10am to 2pm, with a bag of books selling for $8.

There will be no shuttle bus service this year, but parking will be available at the High Meadow School, Key Bank, Express Tech Printing, George Moylan's Funeral Home and the Marbletown Community Center and the Marbletown Elementary School. Traffic control will be provided by the NYS Troopers, Kingston Barracks.

"We hope that everyone will come out to enjoy the festivities on this 70th Anniversary of the Library Fair," said Director Jody Ford. "People have wonderful remembrances of meeting their friends at the Library Fair, and we are happy to keep the tradition going strong."

Book Signing to feature NPR Commentator Frank Deford

Saturday, June 18
from 2 to 5 pm
at Sweetpea in Emmanuel's Plaza

NPR writer and commentator Frank Deford will be doing a book signing for his new book, I'd Know that Voice Anywhere: My Favorite NPR Commentaries, at Sweetpea, a new shop in Emmanuel's Plaza on Main Street (Route 209) in Stone Ridge. The book signing will hosted by Scarlet Crawford, Deford's daughter, who owns the shop.

In addition to the book signing a raffle for gift certificates to Sweetpea and other local businesses will be held, with proceeds being donated to the Stone Ridge Library.

Frank Deford has been the sports commentator at NPR since 1980, appearing most Wednesday mornings. He has presented more than 1,600 commentaries on virtually every subject in the sporting universe. He's chosen about one hundred of his favorites for his latest book, I'd Know That Voice Anywhere.

Deford is the author of seventeen books. While his is often recognized as the finest sports writer of his era, his highly praised historical novels have ranged far afield. Besides Bliss, Remembered he has written about such varied topics as the polio epidemic (An American Summer), reincarnation (The Other Adonis) and Japan before Pearl Harbor (Love and Infamy). His story about modern celebrity, The Entitled, is often cited as the best novel ever written about the sport of baseball.

Two of Deford's books, the novel, Everybody's All-American and Alex: The Life of a Child, his memoir about his daughter who died of cystic fibrosis, have been made into movies. Two of his original screenplays—Trading Hearts, and Four Minutes—have also been filmed.

Deford is said to be amongst the most versatile of American writers. On radio, he may be heard as a commentator Wednesday on Morning Edition on National Public Radio. His television credits include Senior Correspondent on the HBO show, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. He is also Senior Contributing Writer at Sports Illustrated—an association that dates to 1962.

As a journalist, Deford has been elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters, and was voted six times U.S. Sportswriter of the Year by his peers at Sports Illustrated, just to name a few. The magazine GQ has called Deford, "simply the world's greatest sportswriter." President Obama also awarded Deford the National Medal for the Humanities in 2014.

Daughter Scarlet Crawford moved to Stone Ridge last year with her husband Sean last year. Her shop, Sweetpea opened April 1. She formerly worked at Scholastic designing children's magazines. According to Crawford, she and her Dad "are super advocates of education and reading, especially making reading fun for kids at an early age."

Scarlet's dad will sign his work on the day before Father's Day. He will be featured on the local NPR station promoting the event and the raffle on the Saturday morning Roundtable the day of the event.

The event is free and open to the public. For information, contact Scarlet Crawford; for information about Mr. Deford, visit frankdefordbook.

KNITTING GROUP

Every Saturday
10am-noon

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Bag It: is your life too plastic?

Wednesday, June 15, 6:30pm
Film at the Community Center

Americans use 60,000 plastic bags every five minutes, disposable bags that they throw away without much thought. But where is "away?" Where do the bags and other plastics end up, and at what cost to the environment, marine life and human health? This documentary film follows "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he navigates our plastic world. Jeb is not a radical environmentalist, but an average American who decides to take a closer look at our cultural love affair with plastics. Jeb's journey starts with simple questions: Are plastic bags really necessary? What are plastic bags made from? What happens to plastic bags after they are discarded? What he learns quickly grows far beyond plastic bags.

Checkout Bag Legislation Workshop

Wednesday, June 22nd, 6:30-8:30

Marbletown retailers, shoppers, and other interested parties are invited to join the Marbletown Environmental Conservation Commission and representatives from the Town Board and Ulster County Legislature to learn about legislation to reduce the use of plastic checkout bags in New York and beyond, and to contribute to crafting legislation for Marbletown.
