JOKE NIGHT

Wednesday, April 1, 6 – 7:30 pm

Need a good laugh? Who doesn't, especially after this long cold winter? The Library is pleased to present its own prescription for all that ails you (or at least some of what ails you).

Come on out and share your favorite jokes or just come for an evening of laughter. The jokes must be appropriate and inoffensive. Audience must be 18 or older. The moderator will be Cliff Rockmuller, community member, library volunteer and former teacher.

Put in on your calendar! April 1 at 6:00. Bring your favorite jokes and be prepared to share them with the group and to laugh out loud. Jokes are not required, but a sense of humor is.

Here are some examples:
Q: Why did the chicken go to a séance?
A: To get to the other side.

A policeman calls in to the police station.
"Hello. Is this the Sarge?"
"Yes?"
"We have a case here. A woman just shot her husband for stepping on the floor she had just finished mopping."
"Have you arrested the woman?"
"No way, sir. The floor is still wet."

CLIO'S MUSE
A History Reading Club

Wednesday, April 8
7pm in the Biography Room

The reading selection for our April meeting is Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth and faith in the New China (2014) by Evan Osnos. "A vibrant, colorful, and revelatory inner history of China during a moment of profound transformation. From abroad, we often see China as a caricature: a nation of pragmatic plutocrats and ruthlessly dedicated students destined to rule the global economy--or an addled Goliath, riddled with corruption and on the edge of stagnation. What we don't see is how both powerful and ordinary people are remaking their lives as their country dramatically changes." Written by the Beijing correspondent for The New Yorker.

CLIO'S MUSE
A History Reading Club

Wednesday, June 3
7pm in the Biography Room

The reading selection for this meeting is Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean: How a Generation of Swashbuckling Jews Carved an Empire in the New World in their Quest for Treasure, Religion, Freedom and Revenge (2009) by Edward Kritzler. At the end of the fifteenth century, in the aftermath of the Spanish Inquisition many Jews had to flee Spain and Portugal. The most adventurous among them took to the seas as freewheeling outlaws. In ships bearing names such as the Prophet Samuel, Queen Esther, and Shield of Abraham, they attacked and plundered the Spanish fleet while forming alliances with other European powers to ensure the safety of Jews living in hiding. Filled with high-sea adventures–including encounters with Captain Morgan and other legendary pirates.

KNITTING GROUP

Every Saturday
10am-noon

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.

20 Embarrassing Phrases Even Smart People Misuse

Even reputable websites have been caught screwing up these idioms, which spell check often doesn't find. How about:
Sneak peak

A "peak" is a mountain top. A "peek" is a quick look. The correct expression is "sneak peek," meaning a secret or early look at something. This error appeared on Oxford University's site as well as that of the National Park Service.
