Welcome Back Julia & Garret

Sunday, April 6, 2pm
Reference Room

Our life sized portraits of Julia Lawrence Hasbrouck and her husband Garret Decker Hasbrouck, painted in 1840 by Francesco Anelli, have returned to the library and will be the subject of a talk by Dr. William Rhoads, Professor Emeritus of Art History, SUNY New Paltz.

The portraits were a gift from the Hasbrouck's daughter, Julia Hasbrouck Dwight, along with Julia's diaries. She also gifted the community with the 1798 stone building that houses the Library in memory of her parents.

Julia's portrait underwent conservation treatment at Westlake Conservators in Skaneateles, New York, with the help of a grant from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network. Garret's portrait is still in need of this important work.

In his talk Dr. Rhoads will discuss the portraits and the artist in the context of 19th century life, as we also compare and contrast the paintings in their pre-and post-conservation treatment state.

Our program will also transport us to New York City in 1840 as Susan Stessin Cohn of Huguenot Street Historical Society reads from Julia's diary entries, sharing her thoughts about the artist and what it was like to sit for her portrait before the couple moved from Greenwich Village to "the Ridge."

Join us as we celebrate the return of Julia and Garret with refreshments and cheer in our newly-restored Reference Room.

America's Nine First Ladies from New York State

Sunday, May 4, 2 pm
Marbletown Community Center

Elizabeth Kahn Kaplan, Sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities
Presented by the Stone Ridge Library and the Ulster County Historical Society

Of the 46 women who have served as America's First Lady, nine were born in New York State. On Sunday, May 4th at 2 PM, historian Elizabeth Kahn Kaplan will introduce the audience to these nine very different women, each one about whom a fascinating tale can be told. Four recent First Ladies from New York State are familiar to most of us; others, less well known, have stories that deserve to be heard. One was the daughter of a New York City Loyalist who had avoided taking part in the American Revolution. Nonetheless, his daughter married a Founding Father. Before her husband became President, she played a dramatic part in saving the wife of the Marquis de Lafayette from the guillotine.

Audiences will enjoy learning answers to questions such as these: Which wife spoke only Dutch with her husband? Who was known as "The Rose of Long Island" before marrying a President 30 years her senior? Which First Lady gave birth to a daughter whose name was affixed to a candy bar, still available in your local grocery store?

This entertaining yet informative talk will provide insight into the social, political, and economic differences among the nine intriguing First Ladies born in New York State.

Mrs. Kaplan, an educator, writer, and lecturer, has written curriculum guides for the New-York Historical Society and for Stony Brook University. She has presented programs at George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens and at the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. Her presentation is co-sponsored by the Stone Ridge Library, the Ulster County Historical Society, and the New York Council for the Humanities. It is free and open to all. Information: 845-687-8726.

KNITTING GROUP

Every Saturday
10am-noon

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.

On the Shelves:

Authors' powerful stories of how they overcame adversity

Poughkeepsie Journal - Mar. 13, 2014
Written by Casey Conlin

Oprah and most of America loved Wild, Cheryl Strayed's best-selling memoir of drug abuse, loss and recovery on the Pacific Coast Trail. Production is even underway for the movie based on the book, in which Reese Witherspoon will play Strayed. Other powerful stories of people overcoming tough situations from last year include Sonali Deraniyagala's "Wave," the heartbreaking story of a woman who lost her entire family in the 2004 tsunami that hit Indonesia, and "Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness," the frightening medical mystery that Susannah Cahalan lived through.

For more stories like these, check out the following books.

The Answer to the Riddle is Me by David Stuart MacLean. In 2002, MacLean wakes up on a train platform in India with no idea where he is, why he's there, or even who he is. The police assume he's been doing drugs, and he winds up in a mental hospital at one point. This book is the story of McLean learning about himself and trying to piece his life back together. His story was also featured on NPR's "This American Life."

I Forgot to Remember: A Memoir of Amnesia by Su Meck. After an accident, Meck loses all of her memory. She's 22 and she doesn't recognize her husband or kids, she can't read, she doesn't remember her childhood, growing up or anything before the accident. Despite her amnesia, she's released from the hospital, and she begins her journey of relearning all the things adults take for granted. Taking care of children, what a marriage is, what to cook besides tuna fish, where Egypt is. It's all a mystery to Meck, who struggles with what are simple tasks to you and me.

Out of the Woods: A Memoir of Wayfinding by Lynn Darline. After her daughter leaves for college, Darline is left alone. She moves from her apartment in New York City to a small house at the end of a dirt road in Vermont to regroup and get some direction. Darline's greatest tool is her determination, which she uses to keep her off-the-grid house in good repair, and to find her way through the forest in her backyard and her life.

Unremarried Widow: A Memoir by Artis Henderson. After her husband dies while serving in Iraq, Henderson becomes what the military calls an "unremarried widow." She recounts her relationship with her husband from when they first met and her experience living on military bases, to hearing of his death and learning to live without him.

On the Shelves is written by librarians in the Mid-Hudson Library System. It appears monthly. Casey Conlin is director of the Pawling Free Library.
