Some Early Newspaper Notices about the Library
July 7, 1910
STONE RIDGE - There will be a delicatessen sale in the library building on Saturday afternoon and evening this week. Ice cream will be served in the evening. The proceeds will be used for the purchase of new books.
October 10, 1910
STONE RIDGE, Oct. 10. - Many evidences of interest have recently been manifested in our public library opened here last January. Peculiarly fortunate in its friends, it has received as gifts from residents and summer visitors 200 books, nearly half the number of volumes now in the library. A recent acquisition is a set of Irving's works, which belonged to the library conducted by the Village Improvement Association a number of years age. At the suggestion of the original donors, Miss A. E. Abeel, librarian of that association, has turned the volumes over to the present library. Lewis Porter has contributed arrow heads and other Indian relics from the collection of his grandfather, the late Lewis Hine, which are of special interest as they were found in this vicinity. The Honk Falls Power Company donates the electric light used in the library, an evidence of good will greatly appreciated by the trustees.
Unfortunately the Library no longer has the arrowheads or the set of Irving's works. We do have a set of Irving's works which was given to the Library in the 1930s. For more Library history and early newspaper notices: more
Thanks to Charles Cullen for digging up these items.

ON THE SHELVES
Poughkeepsie Journal 3.4.07
On the Shelves with Katherine Mustello
True animal stories make fascinating reads
On the Shelves is a monthly column by a rotating list of mid-Hudson Valley library directors who comment on notable books coming to your local public library.
As a result of our library receiving a grant recently, I was able to purchase a great deal of children's nonfiction books.
I find in our library, many children and adults are hesitant to look to the nonfiction section unless they need specific information about a particular subject. I hope after reading this article, you will look to the nonfiction section more often for compelling reading for you and your children.
It is with pleasure that I share some of my favorites with you.
For a fabulous story that will bring tears to your eyes, try Owen & Mzee : The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship by Isabella Hatkoff, Craig Hatkoff and Paula Kahumbu, with photographs by Peter Greste (Scholastic Press). This story of the unlikely friendship between a 150-year-old tortoise and a young hippo will be loved by young and old. With some lengthy text, it's perfect for school-age children. The story was all over the news, but the book brings it all together with a great message about friendship and helping others.
And as a grade school teacher pointed out, this book's message that friends can come in all shapes and sizes makes it a great tie-in with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. So remember it for next year!
With amazing photography and short concise text, The Red-Eyed Tree Frog by Joy Cowley (Scholastic Paperbacks) is a terrific book to share with younger children. You will both be amazed by the many views of the tree frog's nighttime activities. It is a great first look at nocturnal creatures.
More than eating machines
Another great nonfiction selection, especially for animal lovers, is Surprising Sharks by Nicola Davies, with illustrations by James Croft (Candlewick). This is a fun book full of interesting facts about all kinds of sharks. The lively presentation of basic information about the many species allows readers and listeners to easily learn a lot about the fish. It also reminds us in a humorous way that although sharks do eat humans from time to time, humans eat a lot more sharks.
The World's Greatest Elephant by Ralph Helfer (Philomel), the children's version of "Modoc: The True Story of the Greatest Elephant That Ever Lived," is an amazing story. This chronicle of a boy and an elephant born on the same day is so remarkable, it is hard to believe it is true.
So read these books to your kids and remember to visit the nonfiction section of your library. It's full of great selections.
Katherine Mustello is the director of the Clinton Community Library, a small-town library where the focus is on providing up-to-date services in an old-fashioned way.
