I would like to thank my Teen Advisory Group (TAG)for their inspiration, dedication, and enthusiasm with our "Library" float in this year's Memorial Day parade in Stone Ridge. The float was beautiful. We would all like to thank Douglas Davenport who loaned us his farm truck for the event and safely transported us along the parade route. Look for us again next year! The TAG group meets periodically through the year and helps with programing and book selection for the Young Adult shelves. They are a great group and an essential support to the Children's Room at the library.

Bilingual Bookshelf

Saturday, June 20th at 2:00pm

The children’s room at the Stone Ridge Library wants to announce the inaugural party on Saturday, June 20th at 2:00pm of its “Bilingual Bookshelf.” The brand new grand opening of this shelf is to celebrate the numerous children’s books the library now owns with combined Spanish and English text. With this shelf our hopes are that English speaking families gain knowledge of Spanish speaking cultures while learning and practicing the Spanish language, and for families who speak Spanish to have access to books they can enjoy in both languages.

This “Bilingual Bookshelf” is available through a gift from Tamara Kirson a local resident and bilingual educator in New York City. Tamara is this year’s recipient of the New York Times ESOL Award, as well as being awarded last year the “Outstanding ESOL practitioner” by the Literacy Assistance Center of New York. Last summer the Stone Ridge Library was fortunate enough to work with Tamara during our first ever bilingual story hours.

Festivities at the inaugural party on June 20th will include music by Jim Sullivan who teaches Spanish at Rondout High School. Jim is a musician, specifically a guitar-player, and loves to incorporate music into his classes of foreign language instruction. The music he offers may be traditional, popular or classical. Jim advocates the learning of foreign languages. As he explains, "Learning languages is a core part of being an educated person and becomes more essential as our world gets smaller." Tamara Kirson and Julianna Muth, the library’s children’s librarian will perform a dramatic reading from one of our new books, and delicious ethnic food will be offered to our guests. Please join the library while we celebrate, browse our new bookshelf, enjoy the entertainment, and speak Spanish.

Then through games, choral reading, drama, and crafts the children will secure these words and stories as their own. These story hours are for the Spanish speaking , and the Spanish learning. Improvisational Workshop

Wednesday, July 15, 5:00
ages 11 and up

We’ve invited the Wayfinder folks to work with teens and tweens during an Improvisational workshop. Improvisational Theatre is a method of acting with no script, no censorship, and lots of surprises. We will practice the technique through a series of exercises similar to those seen in professional improvisational shows and popular television programs like "Who's Line is it Anyway.” Since 'improv' is completely spontaneous, the results are often hilarious. Kids feel comfortable in this casual environment and just let go, lower their defenses and feel accepted. They also gain coping skills for uncomfortable social situations and become less shy, reinforced by positive peer feedback and staff encouragement. This is a thoroughly enjoyable program.

Dog on Fleas

Tuesday, July 21, 11:00
all ages

Kids and critics all agree. Dog on Fleas is a unique beast with equal parts brains and muscle. They have been performing and recording intelligent, gutsy music for kids and adults since 1999, and have no plans to stop. They revel in diverse sounds and styles of music, and you can feel their excitement in every note. In performance, Dog on Fleas is a tornado, sucking up fans and whirling them around in a frenzy of fun. The whump of the bass and drums, the sass of the trombone, and the wow of the guitar and keyboards will convert you. Come be inspired to dance, to sing, to enjoy!
