STORY HOURS

During our after-school story hour this season we will be reading books and doing crafts connected with our United States’ history. Join us for ten weeks of fascinating stories and great crafts.

We will begin as our country began with Colonial times and the Revolution, then on to the Pioneers, Civil War, the Wild West, the Industrial Age at the turn of the century, the Depression, the 1950’s and ending with the 1960’s. (This is approximately the time the children’s librarian was born so that is, as far as she’s concerned, where history ends and current events beginJ)

Please call the library at 687-2044 or 687-7023 to sign up.

Story Hours meet:

Kindergarten and First Grades
Tuesdays 3:30 – 4:30

January 23, 30, February 6, 13, 20, 27, & March 6, 13, 20, 27

Second - Fourth Grades
Thursdays 3:30 – 4:30

January 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22, & March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

A simple snack will be provided.

Marbletown elementary students can take the squirrel bus to the library.

If school is closed or closes early because of snow the story hours are cancelled and postponed to the next week. Call 687-7023 if you have any questions.

R.E.A.D. with Joe!!!

Last Fall Joe, a friendly and well read black lab, and his owner/handler Carol, visited our library to listen to children read. They are part of the national R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) program is designed to help improve children’s reading and communication skills by reading to a dog. But not just any dog, these special canines are registered therapy dogs that have been trained and tested for health, safety, appropriate skills and temperament.

This is a wonderful opportunity to motivate children to practice their reading skills. Joe may not be able to read himself, but he is a great listener. Reading with Joe offers children a chance to read at their pace without the pressures of expectations. Joe just loves to be with the children.

Joe will be available to listen to stories Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:00, January 10, 24, February 7, 21, March 7, 21, April 11, 25, and May 9 & 23. Children can sign-up for 15 minutes of reading time with Joe and Carol. This program is intended for a one on one experience, so signing up for a time slot is essential. If you are interested in signing up for this free program call the library at 687-2044 or 687-7023.

Chess Club & Game Guild

During the Game Guild we will make various board games and card games available to children. A simple snack will be provided and participants must remember to bring their library manners, good sportsmanship and sense of fun. We will meet 3:30 – 4:30 on the following Wednesdays: January 10, February 7, March 7, April 11 and May 9.

During the Chess Club we will have our chess boards out and our minds set to challenge other players. All levels of chess players are welcome as well as beginners. A simple snack will be provided and participants must remember to bring their library manners, good sportsmanship and critical thinking skills. We will meet 3:30 – 4:30 on the following Wednesdays: January 24, February 21, March 21, April 25 and May 23.

PRESCHOOL Story time alert!!!

We are looking for someone to run the preschool story time at the library. The story hours usually meet at 10:00 in the morning once a week. The day of the week is flexible. The commitment would be for a story hour series running 6-8 weeks.

Usually the story times involve a story and craft. The Marbletown Youth Commission has always been generous enough to support and fund this program, but we need someone to run it. We can help you get started here at the library with ideas and books.

If you have questions or are interested please contact Julianna at the Library 687-2044 or e-mail: Julianna or Sandy at the Youth Commission 687-0800.
