DOGS DOGS DOGS!!!!

It’ll be the dog days of Autumn at the library this September and October. Where Dogs are children’s best friends!

SPECIAL STORY HOUR

On Wednesday, September 20th we will have our only story hour of the season. Children in grades Kindergarten – Forth can join us at 3:30 for dog stories, dog songs and a dog craft. You’ll also get a chance to meet Joe, a wonderful Black Labrador and his friend Carol Meyer who are part of a National program R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) . Joe will be coming to the library in the Fall to listen to stories (see below for more information). If you are interested in the story hour program please sign-up by visiting our library or calling 687-2044.

INTRODUCING R.E.A.D.
(Reading Education Assistance Dogs)

The R.E.A.D. program is designed to help improve children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog. But not just any dog. Joe, a local black lab, is a registered therapy dog who volunteers with his owner/handler Carol Meyer as a team, to come to the library, and other settings, as reading companions for children.

R.E.A.D. utilizes registered therapy animals who have been trained and tested for health, safety, appropriate skills and temperament and Joe meets all those requirements and more! He may not be able to read, but he’s a great listener.

This is a wonderful opportunity for any child, but especially for those reluctant readers, children with speech impediments, or anyone who needs practice reading out loud. Reading with Joe creates an inviting and motivating environment: relaxed, comfortable, safe, nonjudgmental, empowering and FUN!

Joe will be available at the library Wednesdays, October 4, 18, November 1, 15, 29 and December 13. from 3:30 – 5:00. Children can sign-up for 15 minutes of reading time with Joe and Carol. This program is intended for a one on one experience, so signing up for a time slot is a must! If you are interested in signing up for this free program Call the library 687-7023 or 687-2044.

PUPPET SHOW AND CRAFT

On Saturday, October 7th at 11:00 we will have Jackie Hammond and her “How To Be a Puppeteer” program. It includes a 35-40 minute performance followed by a puppet making workshop. The performance consists of four short stories (The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, etc.) interspersed with puppetry hints and talk of visiting the library. Before the performance the children are given a behind the scenes peak. After the performance we make a DOG puppet to take home. The program is suitable for all ages. If you are interested in this program please call the library 687-2044 to sign-up so we know how many puppets to prepare.

Friends of the Library Group Forming

The Stone Ridge Library is forming a Friends Group to assist with baking for event hospitality. “With many programs already lined up for fall and winter, we’d love to showcase home baked goods,” said Library Director Jody Ford. The first event that comes to mind is the fall book sale, to be held in the yard on Saturday, October 7. Following that is a Fall Fundraiser with Jon Bowermaster in November, and then this year’s Holiday Open House. If you love to bake and want to join the Friends of the Library Baking Crew, please stop in, e-mail or call the Library program line at 687-8726.
