Running for Library Trustee
2008

Suzanne Hauspurg

Suzanne Hauspurg is a life long resident of the Rondout Valley and has served the community in many capacities over the past fifteen years. She has been on the Stone Ridge Library board for twelve years and is currently the President of the Board. Suzanne is also the Vice-President of the Ulster County Historical Society and took the place on the board when her mother, Eleanor Rosakranse passed four years ago. Suzanne has helped in many other benefit occasions for the local schools her children attended.

She has two children, Nate and Sam, both graduated from Rondout Valley High School, of whom she is extremely proud. Nate is attending RPI in Troy, and Sam will be one year at SUNY Ulster before transferring next fall. Suzanne herself graduated from Rondout Valley in 1976. Suzanne continued on and graduated from George Washington University with Bachelors in Environmental Sciences, putting her education to use right away at the US Geologic Survey for a few years, and then turning to other endeavors.

She worked with her brother and sister-in-law, in starting their highly successful real estate firm in Manhattan. In 1984 Suzanne and Daniel Hauspurg were married and lived in Silver Spring, Maryland. They decided to get involved in the restaurant business, starting at the bottom, working in all capacities from dishwashing to management in three of Washington, DC’s finest eating establishments. After the birth of their second child it was time to come home and they took over The Inn at Stone Ridge. Suzanne along with her family owns and operates the successful Inn at Stone Ridge, where her interests are in the restoration of the building and gardens of the facility as well as the culinary arts practiced at the Inn.

Just as the library’s resource base has stabilized with the special library district, now the library itself is in the process of being stabilized, restored and enhanced as its historic houses are prepared for another century. This is a very big job and will take years to complete.

The library holds an important place in defining our community. While it is a small library, it serves a wide range of needs of seniors, children, teens and everybody else. The library is its staff which is critical to making it welcoming. The library is also the houses which are part of the fabric of our historic community. While it will never have a big collection or lots of space, it can continue to serve us well. One of the library’s biggest challenges is fulfilling its service role and its historic role while remaining a lean operation that our small community can support.

I’ve served on the board since 1999, been its president for four years, initiated an historic restoration process and most recently co-founded the Stone Ridge Library Foundation for additional support. I bring to the board my lifelong interest in libraries, my education in law and library science, knowledge and administrative experience as vice dean for administration at Columbia Law School. I look forward to continuing to serving the library.

Originally from Washington, D.C., I graduated from Towson University, after which I returned to my first love, the music business. My specialty was marketing and sales; and promoting major artists and their record companies.

My network grew over the next thirty years, encompassing radio, television, and newspaper personalities leading to major corporate shows for Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, and For Your Entertainment, to name a few. Being very comfortable speaking in front of large audiences and people of stature (C.E.O.’s; Board Members, other heads of corporations) I promoted ideas and raised money.

Later, while working for Gateway Community Industries, I belonged to every major Chamber of Commerce, joining many committees with the end goal of finding work for the severely disabled.

Committed to making a difference, I volunteered at the SPCA; Big Brothers and Big Sisters (I was a Big Brother for 9 years); tutored computer use at the Stone Ridge Library; and at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, am helping support severely disabled returning vets.

Another important recent accomplishment was helping raise over 2 million dollars doing P.R. and promoting one of our bands, along with a 150 piece chorus, and orchestra for a Christmas Show to raise money for the Albany Medical Center Children’s Cancer Ward, sponsored by Freifhoffers and Price Shopper.

At the Stone Ridge Library Fair I have helped increase revenue each year overseeing the silent auction.

I bring a wealth of experience in business and client loyalty, and person-to-person trust, which benefits both ways.
